Another sticky hot mess

Tuesday June 22, 2010
Road to Bahji, 2010
Another long and full day in Haifa, Israel. Another sticky hot mess. The gardens were beautiful. Most of all, each day I love walking around Israel. I like seeing the houses, the stores, the streets. I like experiencing Israel rather than spending all day at the shrines. Albeit, it's pretty but it doesn't mean the same to me. There's not too much to say, as most of what occurred I photographed. I had falafels again today, which is pretty much all I can eat.

Let's Unite, 2010
Wednesday June 23, 2010
On this day we went to the beach! How exciting. The weather was definitely not as hot as other days. It was nice out actually, but something that was different was the abundance of dead jellies all washed up on the shore. I was pretty scared to go in because I couldn't tell if they were going to come out of the sea and try to kill me! So I went only ankle deep.

Cabana Loungin', 2010
There was a bakery in the mall leading to the sea. I got a chocolaty coconut ball; it was superb. It was an excellent beach day. I got a little tanner. Something intriguing was the fact that there were chairs and cabanas for public use. This day was relatively relaxing. I must fall asleep early due to having to wake up early tomorrow. A simple but fun day. I am especially happy that I was able to experience an Israeli beach. We went to a supermarket, watched U.S. vs. Algeria FIFA. U.S. won in the last minute. Dinner was baked carrots and potato.

Thursday June 24, 2010
We went to Akka today or Akko as the locals call it. I always enjoy the 45-minute ride on the bus because it is so high up that I can get a lovely view of the entire journey. The little village was culturally diverse and enlightening to visit. It was mainly an Arab/Muslim area. The little shops had touristy souvenirs that were "fashion jewelry" that was much too expensive. There were stores that sold rosebuds. Akka was really neat.

Baby Blue's Sky, 2010
 I like Israel very much; it is so different from other places. The buildings are so interesting (that is, the buildings that aren't grungy). We went back to Bahji and were there for many hours. I took tons of photos and self-portraits.

Exploring the Garden, 2010
Once we finished with Bahji, we walked around Haifa and went to a Romanian dinner place. One meal option was the animal organ platter consisting of brain, liver, kidney, and worst of all, spinal chord. Might I add, it looked like spinal chord. Everything on the menu was spelled funny. It was an experience to attempt to decipher what the English version said. I wish I had gotten a copy of the menu. It was really hilarious.

"Pixels" = pickels
"Likers" = liquors
"Brendy" = brandy

We got a bunch of random stuff; it was relatively expensive shekel-wise and compared to places we normally go to. We also went to a mosque. Falafels for dinner.

I am encapsulating Israel

Journal of my Journeys - Israel
Saturday June 19, 2010

I am currently on the airplane headed toward Newark, New Jersey. The flight is around 4.5 hours long, then we layover for a couple hours before we fly to Tel Aviv, Israel. It's amusing to think I am going on this journey again, but obviously to different places. Just three long/short years ago, I traveled internationally and now I get to do it again!

Goodbye San Diego!, 2010
I am presently sitting in seat 20A; I am responsible for opening the emergency exit in case it is necessary. I am a potential lifesaver! Rather unfortunately there was no vegetarian options to eat, but I was served salad, carrots, brownie, and a Mr. Pibb knockoff.

Also, this is rather interesting: the lady next to me found it imperative to order a margarita!

Day #1 of Euro Trip #2 was, for the most majority, spent on an airplane.

Sunday June 20, 2010
So far, the trip has mainly been spent on an airplane. The second plane ride was 10 hours long, but seemed shorter due to the vast array of movies, shows, and music to watch on your own individual t.v.

Trainspotting in Tel Aviv , 2010
We arrived in Tel Aviv, Israel at around 5 p.m.-ish. We rode a train to Haifa and then a taxi to our hostel. We bought food from a little food market. Triangle-y spinach things. A short day, as all our journey was traveling from Point A to B to C. Israel's buildings are pretty; there is a noticeable difference between American architecture and Israeli.

Monday June 21, 2010
Woke up relatively early for Carmen standards, 7:30ish. Got ready then we went to breakfast across the street; it was delish. Yogurt, cucumbers, cheese, bell peppers, etc. A hearty and healthy start to an excruciatingly hot day. Fully gets this hot, but I make sure not to trek across town at that point.

Two Israeli Boys, 2010
Haifa is beautiful. Regardless of my complete uninterest in pilgrimage, I can appreciate the splendor that is the Baha'i temple, shrine, gardens and all that nonsense. I thoroughly enjoyed walking around Haifa, off Baha'i property. I tried my best to capture everything on my camera, kind of like I am encapsulating Israel in my camera for those who didn't get a chance to come here; plus, it cements Haifa in my head, seeing as I'll always be able to look back on my photos.

Stairway to Haifa, 2010
I walked throughout the shrine/garden; it was hot. My face nearly melted off. I truly welcome the local food; it has been easy for me to find things to eat. I even had some magnificent falafels to eat for dinner. I love the structures here. When I walked around alone, it was eye-opening to see a day of the average Israeli. I saw a few young boys playing basketball and saw a cow carcass in a meat truck (EW!).

Journal of my Journeys

Hi! It's Carmen here.

I had the fabulous opportunity to travel to six countries last summer, from June 19 to July 21. I spent a month abroad with only a compact suitcase to hold all my belongings. I kept a journal the entire time, writing in it daily. I glued in various souvenirs throughout the voyage: flowers from Israel, a feather from Austria, business cards, receipts, brochures, plane tickets and more. In addition to all that, I took 3,000+ photos. Basically, this trip was pretty well-documented. In celebration of the trip's (almost) one year anniversary, now you get to have a taste of foreign lands, food, and culture through my Journal of my Journeys series.

Stay tuned. It's coming soon. Here's a preview of some of the goodies...

I just wanna boogie to some Marvin

I have a short attention span. These are the things I'm obsessed with at the moment...

Royalty - I wrote an article prior to the royal wedding, but my intrigue has peaked. I visited London in 2007, so England has a special place in my heart. Cute, old Queen Elizabeth is technically my queen as part of the Commonwealth, but I'm most interested in Princess Diana. Her beauty, her really cool '80s and '90s clothing, her kindness, her memory. I also have a slight crush on Prince Harry.

Buckingham Palace, 2007
Magazines - It's my dream to work at a magazine. I've been blasting through Dirt, a cool show about a magazine editor "in the world of celebrity journalism" on Netflix, with the ever-sexy Courteney Cox. In terms of real life, I have a growing stack of unopened magazines. I have yet to browse them for fashion and general pictorial inspiration. This task calls for summer...

OFWGKTA - If you're a huge hip hop fan like me, then listen to "Malaya" and "Elephunk Circus." Both songs have super catchy beats, lyrics, vibes. They used to have their mixtapes available for free on their website, but I believe they took them down. This is a video for Tyler, the Creator's song, "Yonkers." Check it out.

 "I'm an overachiever, so how about I start a team of leaders
And pick up Stevie Wonder to be the wide receiver?"

Summer 2011 - Hot weather. Sun. Sand. Tan. Beaches. Magazines. Frozen yogurt. Flip flops. Sunscreen. Beach towels. Bikinis. Friends. Happiness. Gardens. Picnics. Staying up late. Staying out late. Sleeping in. No school. Memories. It's almost summer. We can do it!
