How Living in California Affects My Style

To me, fashion relates to clothes, trends, name brands, while style is how you as an individual portray those fashions. I was raised in California, near San Diego, where the weather is usually in the 70s. It's not ever super humid. We don't get much rain, definitely no snow. The beach is just a few miles away. These types of things are factored in when it comes to my style.

On top of that I work full-time, so Monday through Friday I'm sitting in an office doing social media. The office environment is casual, so I'm free to wear what I want. The temperatures in the San Diego area are dropping a little bit. In summertime you need 4 fans blowing on you to sleep at night. Finally, at the end of November, I need 2 fuzzy blankets & the window closed to sleep comfortably. That's how much of a wuss I am in the cold. Sorry, I'm from SoCal.

My style kind of reflects that California attitude. It's a relaxed vibe. I like to mix & match & I'm constantly figuring out myself & my style. I've had this purple top & patterned skirt for so many years. So many years in fact, I honestly can't remember where I bought them. I wore them when they were new but there was a 2 to 3 year gap when I just ignored them. I challenged myself to give them a go & I came up with a bold, bright, purple, patterned look.

Top: Unknown // Skirt: Unknown // Windbreaker: Thrifted (vintage Nike) // Boots: H&M // Tights: Pink Zone
I feel that what you wear is kind of a reflection of your personality. What type of girl walks around in a vintage Nike windbreaker & lots of color & pattern? This girl! Keep up with the news & current events. Learn more about what's happening around you. Figure out what you like & challenge yourself.

Yes, I have that SoCal relaxed style. But I can still push my own boundaries. I don't wear black very often. Hmm...maybe that's something I could try. I feel weird wearing heels on a regular basis. Maybe I can challenge myself to wear them once a week. Years ago, combat boots were extremely ugly to me. It was something the punk kids wore at school when I was more of a jeans & t-shirt type of girl. Now combat boots are my go shoe during the fall. Last year was my first year delving into beanies & now I wear them all the time.

Take risks. Try something new. You may just surprise yourself & the world. How has your style changed over time? How would you describe your fashion sense? Does where you live affect your style? :]

  19. no humidity and usually in the 70s? sounds like perfect weather to me!! it gets so hot here in Florida during the summer... plus we have rainy summers so add humidity and rain to hot and you have the perfect recipe for disgusting weather lol I am so glad it's a little chilly now... cool temps with sunshine is perfection!

  23. Where one lives definitely has an influence on style. I, myself, prefer dark colours and the kind of drapped clothing you see during "Fall" in cooler climates. That doesn't work in The Bahamas - so I always struggle on what to wear because I don't enjoy typical warm weather clothing (I don't do sleeveless anything and I haven't work shorts since I was 12). :-)

    1. Oh gosh, that wouldn't work well here either. I'd be hot & sticky all the time. Now that it's slightly cooler I can get away with more layers -- albeit thin layers. :]

  24. So fun! My mom actually had a skirt with a pattern EXACTLY like that that I used to steal from her constantly (Old Navy... maybe?) but it wasn't that cut. I totally miss it! I love all of the bright, fun colors - California is certainly welcoming to that. In the northeast, our clothing is as cold as our hearts ;) haha.

  28. Great post Carmen, I completely agree with shopping your own closet. Put things away, and pull them out once you have forgotten about them! Or maybe just don't think about it too much, read the news instead, and see what results from absentmindedly choosing from your closet. Haha! Love it. Great blog!

  30. I think you made a good point - where we live has a huge impact on our style, I think it's more important than people are willing to admit :) The way you dress is exactly how I imagined California style - cool and eclectic. As to me, I live in Central Europe, so I have all four seasons here. That definitely means that I need a wide range of clothes - from sundresses to wollen coats. Even if harsh winters are not enjoyable, I like the idea of dressing totally differently every few months :)

  32. Totally digging that jacket top! So funky in a good way :)

Totally agree with our climates affecting our style; I live in Ohio so I'm either wearing a tank and leggings or 2 pairs of pants and 3 winter jackets, it's no fun!

  39. I always admire women like you who can own a bold print and wear it so well. They typically scare me. I have no idea how to pull them off.

I'm a very plain jane, but I like that. Uncomplicated, tee shirt and a solid pair of jeans suits me quite nicely most days.

How has my style evolved over time? I stopped trying to be trendy. I couldn't keep up. I just do me now. :o)
