The Booze Brothers Brewery Experience

I entered Booze Brothers, a local brewery in the lovely Southern California city of Vista, CA. It was a rainy Sunday afternoon in North San Diego County, approximately 2:20 p.m. There was a good turnout -- many people were drinking, chatting, enjoying their time. Folks brought their dogs & their kids.

The brewery is now a family event. I mentioned this to my boyfriend as a possible foreshadowing of our future. One couple with 2 small children appeared to come straight from church, dressed in their Sunday finest. A David Bowie tune played in the background. A man in a raincoat stopped by the wheelbarrow of chips to pick one up. Are they free? I wondered. The answer: yes.

Booze Brothers* is owned by two brothers, Dave & Donny Firth -- the name makes so much sense now, duh -- Booze Bros. I met the co-owner Dave, who at 31 looks incredibly young, the media specialist, Kris, & Natalie, one of the beertenders. Beertender. Cool job title, no?

This is a collaboration between myself & Booze Bros. In Vista, the dedicated beer drinkers who investigate these delicious brews are members of an elite squad known as the Craft Beer Crew. This is my story. Dun Dun. *bonus points if you understand my Law & Order: SVU reference*

The beer:
There are currently 13 different brews available on tap. Booze Brothers have 10 staple beers that stay in heavy rotation & usually 4 experimental/seasonal beers. I was given the opportunity to try all of them. ALL OF THEM!!! My top beers (in order of alcohol content, lowest to highest): Mama Kombucha, Apple Champagne, Snow Blind, Easy Rider Brown, Sundown Stout, & Honey June Mead. Pints range from $3-$6. Tasters are $2 each or 4 for $6.

Mama Kombucha is  tart, blond, & light. It's only 2% IBU & absolutely tastes like a beer version of kombucha -- a fermented drink made with tea, sugar, bacteria, & yeast. Okay, it tastes better than it sounds.

Apple Champagne is light, crisp, & slightly sweet. The apple undertones give it a smooth & refreshing taste. This is something I can imagine myself wanting to sip on a hot summer's day. I was quoted saying "mmmmm" as I first tried it.

Snow Blind is a strong Belgian wit with heather flowers & coriander. It's a light beer with a nice spiced kick thanks to the coriander. My boyfriend also really enjoyed this one.

Easy Rider Brown is a brown ale, malty, & nutty with a medium body. It has great malt flavor that helps it stand out from the pack.

Sundown Stout has hints of dark fruit & coffee, which I adore. I'm all for coffee stouts, despite being a person who hates black coffee. It goes down smooth.

Honey June Mead is quite a beer, as it's the lightest in color (paired with Mama Kombucha) yet the heaviest in alcohol content. Made with sparkling alfalfa mead, this tastes like a non-kid-friendly juice leaving you wondering "How did I get this drunk?" Excellent.

The decor:
As far as decor, Booze Brothers is one of my favorites out of any brewery I've been to & I've been to many. There's an abundance of greenery, hanging plants, cacti, & various shrubbery strategically strewn about. During Christmastime, they had fresh pine & eucalyptus hanging from the ceiling -- it was gorgeous & made the whole place smell like Christmas. There's a lot of wood & mostly everything is handmade. The bathroom smells exactly like a log cabin that I used to go to when I was a kid. The patio has flowers, benches, & heat lamps. It was abandoned due to the rain, but normally people like to chill outside.

The service:
As with most busy places, the service correlates with how many people there are. There were only two people serving beer -- Dave & Natalie. They were both working to get people their beers. Sometimes only one person was at the counter, so you may be waiting a minute before being served. This is to be expected & perfectly fine because I usually don't initially know what I want. Every time I've come in the service was friendly, genuine, & relatively quick.

The ambiance:
The high ceiling mixed with the sound of music & the loud chatter of people make it so you must speak loudly & with conviction. Most breweries are like this because they are in essence a warehouse. You don't go for the acoustics, you go for the beer. I've come to Booze Brothers several times & it's always an enjoyable experience with friends.

Overall, my adventure was fabulous. I had a joyous time trying their brews & getting to know more about the business. Booze Brothers is a brewery you should head to with some friends, spend a couple hours chatting about the meaning of life, & sip on some Honey June Mead.
