Dude, Where's My Car? aka My Car Got Towed

Dear Towing Company,

Thank you for the heart attack. One of life's best feelings is heading out to your car only to find it missing. I turned around to my friend & said "Dude, where's my car? Didn't I park here?" I hoped my ditzy brain just couldn't recall where I parked. I frantically clicked my car keys, wishing to see the flashing lights signaling an unlocked car.

Nope. My little red Toyota Corolla was nowhere in sight. Apparently I overstayed my welcome in the parking spot I wasn't supposed to park in. I guess that's a lesson learned the hard way. Most lessons are learned the hard way; this is something I learned......the hard way.

Somehow the 3 mile trip from my friend's apartment complex to the towing yard cost a whopping $277. Oh don't worry about it. I'm a billionaire with tons of money & no bills to pay, so I can totally spare it. But you know, thanks for thinking about the little guy.

dude where's my car

Upon reflection, it would've been a good idea to take some photos. But at the time, the last thing on my mind was to snap a few shots of sad cars in a dark, spooky parking lot. I had plans to meet my friend for dinner & drinks at 8 p.m. The towing yard was closed but luckily I was able to get my car that night. By the time I got my car out of the compound it was about 9:30.

I busted out my license & registration & forked over my credit card to Mike, the lot attendant. I would've preferred to buy something else for $277, but that's just the way the world works. I reluctantly signed the paper & I was on my way.

I definitely needed dinner & drinks by that point. I wasn't about to go home defeated, out nearly $300, & hungry. Even though I'm a billionaire rolling in swimming pools filled with cash, I was thankful my friend bought me a drink.

Anyway, I'm writing this letter to say thanks. Thanks for the heart attack & the lost time & the money down the drain. I love it!

Thanks so much,
Carmen

Have you ever had the (dis)pleasure of getting your car towed? How much did it cost you? I'm curious about their pricing. How did you feel when you first spotted your missing car?

  1. Ouch. I've been there. Visitor parking was not a fun time in college. It wasn't nearly as expensive though, only like $75. But roam towing was forreal and constant in Gainesville. Sorry this happened, but at least you got, (sort of?) a fun story out of it. Or maybe just a shared experience with the rest of the population, haha.

    1. Oh yes. Visitor parking was the worst. My parents got towed the first day they visited me! >.<

  2. Oh No!! Getting your car towed is the worst! I got mine towed from my apartment community a few months ago for parking outside my carport, even though we pay for an extra parking space (I'm still mad about this) and had to pay $200+ to get it out....no fun! Those could have been some really cute new shoes !! lol

  7. Eeekk! Thank goodness I never had my car towed before, I know what a bloody pain in the ass it is. We did had the 'pleasure' of watching the drama of our neighbours car getting towed twice. Peeps running out from the house in their bath robe, priceless.

  10. I'm so sorry your car got towed. Even worse you had to pay so much for that. It's quite pricey over here too. It depends where you have parked your car. 200-300 euros.

  11. Your sarcasm and wit are absolutely charming. I had a ton of fun reading this, though I'm pretty sure I shouldn't be laughing at another's mishap... Haha, other than that, $277?! That's pretty insane! Anyway, cheers to a good weekend!

  17. That's my biggest fear! I'm so afraid to park anywhere, even on the road in case someone tows it. It's such a pain in the butt.
Glad you were able to get your car within a reasonable amount of time! $277 that didn't really need to be wasted though :(

  18. Oh no! That is just terrible! What a way to ruin the night. I agree you could have used that money for something much better than a ticket. I have gotten a few tickets because I read the parking signs wrong but never actually had my car towed. I hope it never happens

  19. Oh no! That's terrible and $277? That's outrageous! I've been lucky so far and haven't had my car towed, but my parents did. It was about $150, which sounds like a bargain compared to your ticket!

  20. I don't have a car, I really don't know the feeling, but it sounds horrible and expensive. Instead of towing, they should have escorted you back to your car and asked you to drive your car away from the parking lot. They just had to steal your car to cost more trouble.

  22. Ouch :( I don't drive so I can't get my car towed away, but one of my friends did. He parked in front of a school overnight, totally forgetting that you couldn't park there on school hours. It definitely pays to be a little more careful!

  26. This really is my worse nightmare! I've never had this happen to me but I always double check where I'm allowed to park and how long for. If I'm unsure, I will spend an extra 10-20 minutes driving around until I can find somewhere to park! I think I'd actually burst out crying if I saw my car gone!!

  27. luckily I have no idea how does it feel or how much does it cost. my hometown has free parking anyway and when there are spots where you shouldn't park (in front of some doors or gates for example) then I just follow the signs and don't park there. but in bigger towns things are of course more serious. parking is expensive in Estonia, especially in our capital town. and when you don't pay for parking then it's of course even more expensive because of the crazy tickets you will receive. the money you had to pay is enormous I must say! this company must be pretty happy with all that money.
