Acure Ultra-Hydrating Body Lotion Review

Thursday, January 28, 2016

It's winter & that means it's time for the season of dry skin. This winter I've been in desperate need of hydration — flaky, unattractive skin galore. Beautiful imagery, I know. My skin has been unusually drier than normal, leaving my skin thirsting for moisture. I received this Ultra-Hydrating Body Lotion with cocoa butter & CoQ10 from Acure* & figured there was no better time to give it a go.

acure body lotion

This lotion is free from: gluten, parabens, cruelty, synthetic fragrance, & silicone. It's 100% biodegradable & includes ingredients like a acai, blackberry, rosehips, & argan. Now that's a pretty good starting point for me. The Ultra-Hydrating Body Lotion packaging is pretty & relatively simple. The lotion costs $9.99 & comes in an 8 ounce squeeze tube.

acure body lotion

I have to be honest & say I didn't like this lotion initially. The cocoa butter scent was slightly off putting & simply not alluring at all. I used it a couple times but decided to tuck it away in my cabinet. The lotion was there for a couple weeks before I busted it out again. I was in desperate need of moisture, so I threw caution to the wind & used it.

acure body lotion

The formula is itself is quite hydrating. The lotion is thick, very thick. It leaves a streak until you rub it in thoroughly. Admittedly, I applied a hefty amount of lotion for just my arm but the idea is the same. However, this might be exactly what you need during the winter, especially if your skin tends to get extremely dry — like my boyfriend.

acure body lotion

As I said earlier, the scent isn't my favorite but it's not unpleasant. I'm simply not a fan of cocoa butter, so that's a matter of personal preference. This is perfect for those of you who are sensitive to fragrance because it's mild & natural. My boyfriend & I busted through this in a matter of weeks, so $9.99 is an approachable price point.

acure body lotion

I wouldn't purchase this particular lotion myself, but I would opt for a different scent from Acure like the Calming Body Lotion with lavender. I'm an immense fan of lavender so that seems like a good choice for me. Overall, the Ultra-Hydrating Body Lotion was indeed hydrating & efficient. I would recommend it for those of you searching for a cure to your dry skin dilemma.

Golden Hour // OOTD

Tuesday, January 26, 2016

Life is a constant adventure, filled with the unknown. We run around day to day never truly understanding what's to come with the passing of each second. For instance, Fred & I went out to shoot some photos for my outfit of the day. Little did I know I was going to get cut by glass as I posed vainly for a photo.

california fashion blogger

In my head I imagined careless teenagers throwing their empty beer glass bottles against the rocks, leaving millions of glass shards out for someone to kill themselves with. A minuscule piece of glass pricked my finger, causing a surprising amount of burgundy blood to stream out. I wiped away the blood with a napkin & we moved on to a new location.

My blog is a place of realness. You get the honest-to-goodness Carmen. Sometimes it's hard to get to know a person through their words or photos, so I'd like to be more expressive, more articulate in 2016. This is the real life behind the scenes experience of a blogger. Glamorous, right? Anyhoo, the damage was minimal & life moves on. The blood clots, a scab forms, & the world still turns.

The sun was low & setting, creating a naturally majestic lighting. Oh yes, that magic hour. I'm all about it. It looked like nature's version of photo editing. Everything was gorgeous. Your skin looked healthier. The earth appeared greener. The smiles of everyone who passed into the rays of light grew into a full blown grin.

The light hit my face, my necklace, my cardigan, & genuinely made me feel freaking fabulous. The Labradorite & Moonstone Necklace* from Michelle Smith Collection has become one of my most prized possessions as far as jewelry is concerned. This handmade rosary-style necklace garners compliment after compliment. I genuinely adore it & wear it regularly.

I feel like this entire outfit is the essence of me, mixing casual pieces with glamorous details. I've always been the girl who enjoys being low-key & it has only been recently where I found another layer of myself. I like quality, expensive pieces or experiences as long as they bring something positive & joyous to my life. Like I said, life is a constant adventure & you learn something new every day, even if it's about yourself.

Despite the glass, which symbolizes the negatives in life, there's always something to look forward to right around the corner — be it self-realization, reflection, or even a happy circumstance. You just have to keep chugging along in the train that is life. There is absolutely no way to know the name of your destination or how long it takes to get there. All we know is that we're going somewhere.

I'm in a happy, golden place in my life. Of course there's always room for improvement; I could definitely eat healthier, exercise more, & just be a better person all around. Generally speaking, I feel like I'm on the right path. So my question to you is where do you want to go? Where do you see yourself going in 2016 & beyond? What does it take to get there?  :]

72 Thoughts I Had During The X-Files Revival Premiere

Sunday, January 24, 2016

If you've been following my blog in the last few months, you'll know that my boyfriend & I have been blasting through The X-Files on Netflix. We watched episode after episode, then watched the movie(s) then did a little bit of Google research in preparation for this day. Tonight is the night of The X-Files reboot premiere! I am excited! If you don't want any spoilers don't read any further. This is chock full of tasty spoilers. Once again: don't read any further if you haven't watched the premiere!! Okay here we goooo....

joel mchale, kaaboo del mar
I took this photo of Joel McHale at KAABOO Del Mar, not knowing he was about to be a part of history in The X-Files reboot.

1. It's 7:06 pm!! How come The X-Files isn't on yet?
2. Okay, now it's 7:11. Thanks football.
3. I guess I'll just look up #TheXFiles on Twitter.
4. Good thing I didn't make any plans tonight.
5. Oh my gosh! Now there's a timer in the bottom left corner; it says one minute & nine seconds until the premiere.
6. Oh my god it's here!!!!!
7. Yay Mulder!
8. Ew Fluke Man!
9. Haha the 21st-century special effects.
10. "Are we being lied to?"
11. Aw the intro credits.
12. MITCH PILEGGI!!
13. Joel McHale is an interesting casting choice.
14. Oh whoa a space ship.
15. Scully!!!
16. Oh she has a phone call...
17. Ah shoot! Is Skinner still assistant director after all these years?
18. OMG Obama is in The X-Files.
19. What do you mean you barely reach Mulder now, Scully?
20. Haha Joel McHale.
21. Gillian Anderson has like no wrinkles.
22. The old team is reunited at at last.
23 Mulder hitched a ride with Uber?? Pop culture everywhere.
24 "I only want to believe."
25. Who is Kelly  Cahill?
26. Oh.
27. Scully's hair isn't as red as it used to be.
28. Ew what are those?
29. Scoop mark scars?
30. Back to the flashback.
31. OMG an alien.
32. Oh no they killed him!
33. You'd think Scully would believe more by now.
34. Endogenous depression killed Mulder & Scully's relationship apparently.
35. Oh dang that spacecraft turned invisible.
36. Gravity warp drive.
37. Aw the poor little alien.
38. Why is Scully bloody?
39. Are they implying that Navajo Native Americans are aliens?
40. "Sveta, who took your babies?"
41. Scully is still rocking her cross necklace.
42. Mitch Pileggi!
43. Oh no don't take it out on the poster, Mulder!!
44. Wow! Mulder's pencils are still stuck in the ceiling.
45. Is Joel McHale trying to get with Scully?
46. Ok so Joel McHale's character's name is Tad O'Malley.
47. Scully's expecting — no hoping — for a call from Mulder.
48. "Men against humanity." Sounds about right.
49. Your headlights are still on Scully.
50. "Friend & physician" but not lover!!??
51. Why is Sveta there?
52. Scully's headlights are off now.
53. Maybe I have an old car because my car does not do that.
54. Get out of here Tad!
55. Dang slow down Tad.
56. Forgot Sveta was there.
57. The Scully eye roll is back.
58. Well if the tests came back positive for alien DNA that would be too easy wouldn't it?
59. The test results came back in!
60. They're going to try & blow up the spaceship.
61. Oh no they blew it up.
62. Finder Spyder is the name of the search engine. Haha.
63. #DONTGIVEUP
64. "We need to protect Sveta?" Tell me more.
65. What ARE you saying, Scully?
66. "We've got to stop the sons of bitches," she says.
67. Poor Sveta.
68. Dang she got blown up.
69. Cigarette smoking man is back.
70. They've reopened the X-Files?!?!
71. Oh my god that's the end. The show's over. How dare they?
72. Now I just have to wait until tomorrow for part two.

The first X-Files reboot episode was a bit of a whirlwind. I'm a slightly confused & will probably browse social media to see what people are saying. Until then, it's important just to watch the series as it goes & see how things play out. I was too young to enjoy X-Files when it first came around so I'm excited to be a part of it's revamp. The new X-Files generation! Only five more episodes to go.

I want to believe.

Did you think of the first episode? Have you seen The X-Files? :]

5 Things I'm Loving Right Now ♥

Friday, January 22, 2016

How's your January going? This is the last 5 Things I'm Loving Right Now ♥ for the month, so it gives me a moment to reflect. Overall, January has been quite kind to me. I admit that I wrote "2015" on paper several times; I question when I'll figure out it's actually 2016. I've been going hard at work & on my blog, consistently trying to up my social media strategy & knowledge. I'm working on a couple new Social Media Basics posts for you guys, so stay tuned for that. Until then, browse through what I'm loving right now to keep you occupied!

latte art

Latte Art - Sometimes you have to stop by a mom & pop shop to get a good coffee. I like to bring my laptop & maybe my boyfriend or a girlfriend & just get some work done. Latte art simply adds to the experience. However, I often feel bad slurping it up since it ruins the art. Oh the dilemmas of life & lattes.

glamping hub
Glamping Hub* - Vacations are seriously one of life's best things, so I'm excited to have a stay in one of Glamping Hub's California Getaways locations. There are several tempting options like a bed & breakfast in Joshua Tree, a cozy cabin in Yosemite, or even a tent & tipi in Lake Tahoe. Now I just have to narrow it down. I'm excited for a mini vacation! Now if only it came with a massage...

southern california winter

"Winter" - I am liberal with my usage of the word "winter" in Southern California, but I've enjoyed the slightly chilly temperatures here. Every morning when I get up, I have the opportunity to actually wear a jacket or coat or some type of layering garment. It makes me incredibly happy. I'm aware I talk about the weather & the temperature a lot, but bear in mind this is as good as it gets here (as far as winter is concerned).

romantic anniversary

Anniversary - The boyfriend & I celebrated our three year anniversary! We are just as in love as ever, if not more. We've reached a level of understanding about each other's personality, dreams, goals, insecurities, & all that relationship jazz. It's been a good three years & I look forward to many more! Woo!

making a murderer
Making a Murderer - This documentary series comes highly recommended. It's been buzzing all over social media, so do yourself a favor & watch it immediately — binge watch it this weekend. My boyfriend & I indulged every night after a long day of work until we completed the series. I can't really reveal much because you just have to watch it. In short, it's about a man accused of murder. Let me just say that it'll leave you spinning with emotions & questioning everyone.

What are YOU loving right now? :]

Get the Look: Cher's Black & White Outfit from Clueless

Wednesday, January 20, 2016

Clueless is a 1990s cult classic. If you haven't seen it, I encourage you to watch it as soon as you can. It's one of my top favorite movies ever; I've mentioned it a couple times: Halloween Costume Idea & Girls Night Films to Watch on Netflix. There are so many wonderful & memorable outfits from the film, & they'll leave you lusting for your own version. I want to highlight Cher's black & white look from the beginning of the film because it's simple, approachable, & easy to recreate.

The best part is you may have most of these items in your wardrobe. They're wearable & versatile garments you can utilize over & over. The first thing you'll need is a sheer black button up shirt with a white cropped tank top underneath. It's easy, breezy, beautiful. Cher's sheer shirt has ruffled cuffs so you can keep that in mind if you want to be authentic. But you go could for a white tank with a black/sheer shirt.

cher horowitz outfit

The next thing you'll need is a pair of black trousers. Most of us probably already have these for formal days, job interviews, work, whatever. They are sleek & the perfect way to wear pants. Cher's trousers are slightly baggier, but I prefer something more fitted. It's the ideal way to modernize a 90s inspired outfit.

Oxford shoes are having a huge come back. They're all over the place & they are pretty easy to find. You may want to go for a pair of shiny, chunky oxford shoes. They are nearly identical to the ones that you could see Cher wearing in Clueless

In the film, Cher wears a choker necklace, a beaded cross necklace, & a simple ring. Keep the look clean & elegant with a darling beaded necklace. A beaded necklace can be used in a myriad of ways so you won't be left owning something that you never use.

Clueless has so many awesome outfits it's hard to ignore. Try to pull together this look with items you have in your closet. See how close you can get to the original & then you can integrate a couple pieces from your own wardrobe.

What do you think of this Clueless outfit? Would you wear this? Have you seen the movie? :]

Cheesing it Up in Gouda, Netherlands

Monday, January 18, 2016

Gouda is one of my favorite types of cheeses. It has such a creamy, rich, & soft texture that makes it nearly irresistible to munch on. That's why I was so excited when Gouda, a city in the Netherlands, made its way onto my family's radar during our Europe trip. I made sure we put it on the itinerary because I just had to see where the famous cheese hailed from.

gouda, netherlands

The city of Gouda is world famous for its cheese, but it's also known for smoking pipes & stroopwafels — a waffle sandwich made from two extremely thin layers of baked batter with a caramel syrup filling in the middle aka a gift from the heavens. Stroopwafels were invented in Gouda.! How cool is that?! Side note: I ate soooo0oo many stroopwafels on my trip; they're incredible. If you have access to an international market, keep your eyes out for them.

gouda, netherlands

The market square has a gorgeous gothic city hall that's hard to miss & beautiful to photograph. You can explore the town, the market, the shops, & everything in between in a day. Gouda is a relatively small place so you can appreciate it for a few hours & move on to another destination. After all, there is so much to see & so little time when it comes to traveling.

gouda, netherlands

Munching on local delicacies is one of my favorite things to do in Europe. The Netherlands is particularly known for their apple tarts so I recommend eating them as often as possible. While I was there, the indulgence was real. The apple tart in Gouda had giant chunks of apple. Soft on the outside with a slightly crispy interior. An absolute delight.

gouda, netherlands

Since Gouda cheese hails from Gouda, Netherlands (duh), you have the opportunity to sample product like you're the queen (or king) of the world. Coconut gouda, pesto gouda, paprika gouda, fenugreek gouda. All the flavors of the rainbow. It's something I still dream about. I tell you what: there's no gouda like the gouda from Gouda. Say that fast 10 times!

gouda, netherlands

If you make it out to Gouda, be sure to take the time to eat any of the local food.  I drooled at every bakery & cafe & restaurant I walked by. One of the best parts of traveling is tasting various types of cuisine. Eating out can get expensive so it's important to understand how to eat on a budget while traveling abroad. How cute are these fruit-inspired gummy candies?!?

gouda, netherlands

The canals of Holland are magnificent. Each one has its own personality & ranges in every city. Back in the day, the canals were used for water management, transportation, & defense purposes. As the times changed, the canals are normally utilized for recreational activities like canal tours. Gouda continues to use the tradition of canals with some unique cheese-inspired decorations.

My experience in Gouda, Netherlands was delicious but brief. Take a look at the town center or the local shops, & make sure you stop to enjoy a pastry & some cheese. Grab a wheel of gouda to go as your own edible souvenir. Gouda is an old town with a lot of character. It remains fondly in my heart.

Have you visited Gouda? Have you eaten the cheese? :]

Feed Me: Foods I'm Grubbing On Right Now

Friday, January 15, 2016

Nourishment is a beautiful thing. Living in Southern California means I have access to so many types of foods from various cultures. Stepping aside from beauty & fashion, today I want to get into something very special to me — food. Food is something everyone has in common; we all eat! Today is all about food I'm grubbing on right now, essentially foods that I am totally in love with at the moment. If you missed the last discussion on food, check out my latest post from the Feed Me series: Trying Food from Around the World.

chickpea chips

Chickpea Chips - The first thing on my grub list is something I love making as a snack. It's something I like to call chickpea chips. I'm still perfecting the recipe, but once I do I'll share it with you guys. Basically you take garbanzo beans & bake them in the oven until they become crispy. You can add any seasoning you want & it's a delicious alternative to your average chips. Bonus points because they're filled with fiber & protein.

rainbow carrots

Rainbow Carrots -  Let's be real for a moment. How stunning are these organic rainbow carrots?!? I get such a kick out of using them because they completely change the look of any dish with carrots. I spotted them at the grocery store & they were the same price as regular carrots. I figured I might as will mix it up & I haven't turned back. I've been using these for about a month now. According to this Time article, these colored carrots have different nutrients to help with digestion, heart disease, & more.

gordita

Gordita - As I've mentioned a few times, my boyfriend is Mexican. Sometimes his mom surprises us with some honest to goodness genuine Mexican cuisine. It's a joy to have & I've been spoiled because no other Mexican food beats hers. This is a gordita, essentially a masa or corn pattycake. You could sort of think of it as a very thick tortilla. This gordita is topped with eggs, green chilies, tomato, & green onion. Yum!

Which of these foods I'm grubbing on right now looks the best to you? Have you ever tried any of these? What are YOU grubbing on? :]

18 Bath & Body Works Wallflower Refill Scents & Descriptions

Wednesday, January 13, 2016

Just because the holiday season is over doesn't mean you have to give up on the joyful festivities & the holiday aromas. After Christmas I celebrated my second annual tradition of going to Bath & Body Works to restock on the Wallflower refills. If you want to learn more about them, take a look at my Bath & Body Works Wallflower Review; it has all the information you need to determine whether a Wallflower is a good fit for you or not. I love them because they're a hassle-free way to have a constant wave of lovely scents waft through the room.

bath and body works wallflower refill

I did some after Christmas shopping & splurged on these Wallflowers. I went all out & purchased 18 different ones! I even rejected a few just to cut down on the price. They were on sale for $3 a pop; their regular retail price is $6.50. Last year I bought them for $2.50 so their sale price went up. However, each Wallflower refill lasts about four weeks/one month, so this batch is sure to get me through the whole year & then some -- approximately a year & a half.

bath and body works wallflower refill

These are the Wallflower scents I bought followed by their description:
Alpine Cheer - Breathe in crisp mountain balsam, cedar wood bark, & snow white cranberry.
Cheers Mulled Wine - Raise a glass with red fruit & mulled apples layered over rare saffron spice.
Cinnamon Caramel Swirl - Cinnamon enhances silky vanilla caramel in the fragrance of a holiday treat.
Cinnamon & Clove Buds -  A warmly spicy scent -- classic cinnamon, simmering clove buds, & exquisite vanilla.
Dashing Through the Snow - Enjoy the crisp cool air of a sleigh ride with balsam, wintery musk, & sparkling citrus.
Fresh Balsam - The invigorating fragrance of snow-dusted balsam, fir, & eucalyptus.
Fresh Sparkling Snow - Icy pear, frozen melon, & frosted musk capture winter's sparkle.
Harvest Cranberry Woods -  The beauty of harvest in fresh cranberries, black currant, & cinnamon.
Holiday Mulled Cider - Enjoy apple cider mulled with holiday spice & creamy birchwood.
Home Pumpkin Cheesecake - Decadent cheesecake in notes of spiced pumpkin, cream, & a golden crust.
Sparkling Icicles - Let holiday parties sparkle with the fragrance of moss, bergamot, & citrus.
Sweater Weather - Cuddle up with an aromatic blend of eucalyptus, juniper berry, & fresh sage.
Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin - An inviting mixture of harvest pumpkin, sweet vanilla cream, & cinnamon stick.
Thankful Chestnut & Clove - A luxurious blend of rich chestnut, aromatic cedar, & freshly ground cloves.
Twisted Peppermint - Make it very merry with peppermint, vanilla & sugary musk.
Welcome Autumn Spiced Wreath - Welcome Thanksgiving with balsam sprigs, cinnamon bark, & ground cloves.
Winter - Pine, icy mandarin, & winter woods embody this sparkling season.
Winter Sun - A blend of citrus, vetiver, & musk inspired by winter sunlight.

bath and body works wallflower refill

Some of these are very clearly Thanksgiving/autumn related aromas whereas others are Christmas/winter related. Given that each Wallflower is three bucks & will last me about 30 days, that adds up to about $.10 a day. That's not a bad figure at all. My boyfriend randomly chose one & we currently have Holiday Mulled Cider keeping the bedroom smelling fresh. Within about an hour I noticed the smell emitting from the Wallflower. It's noticeable but not overwhelming for your nose.

bath and body works wallflower refill

I would not purchase these at regular price that's why I stock up once a year after Christmas. To me, $6.50 for each Wallflower is simply not worth it but $3 is considerably more approachable. I have never used any of these particular fragrances before but I'm glad that I can continue the holiday spirit throughout the year.

Do you have a Wallflower? Which of these scents sounds the best to you? How do you fragrance your home? I'd love to learn what you do to make your house, bathroom, bedroom, etc. smell delectable. :]

Cali Cool // OOTD

Monday, January 11, 2016

It's considered a blessing when San Diego has temperatures under 60° F. It's something I wholeheartedly look forward to & attempt to relish in while it happens. Autumn of 2015 in Southern California was unseasonably warm(er than usual). I recall during my childhood that trick-or-treating on Halloween night always required an abundance of layers due to the frigidity. This year the temperatures failed to drop up until mid-December.

I always thought extremely long straight hair with a beanie was the epitome of a California cool girl. When Irresistible Me* asked if I wanted to try out some of their hair extensions I figured it was a great way to switch up my look with minimal effort. I opted for the 22 inch Medium Brown Silky Touch extensions. I got the 200 gram option — the heaviest set. The normal retail price for this particular extension set retails at $199.

california fashion blogger

california fashion blogger

Hair extensions are wonderful if you have short, medium or even long hair because it can alter your entire look. I felt so different having such a long, straight locks. My hair has never looked (nor been) that long & it gave me a wave of confidence. I liked the look & the possibilities the extensions can give me for future hairstyles & photos. Speaking of versatility, the reversible Betsey Johnson vest was something I looked forward to taking out for the winter season. I rarely get the opportunity to wear it so the time is now!

california fashion blogger

california fashion blogger

The only problem I had was that the Medium Brown extensions didn't match my hair color at all & that's no fault of Irresistible Me. I looked through all of their colors, watched the videos, & chose as carefully as I could. I tried the extensions in my house a few times & thought the color was identical to my own hair. I was impressed...

california fashion blogger

california fashion blogger

Then I got all dolled up, busted out the extensions, styled my hair, & went outside. When the sunlight hit my hair, I realized just how varying the colors were. I never knew how red my hair was until I compared it to the extensions. However, this is an easy fix. I can dye the  extensions the next time I henna my hair.

california fashion blogger

california fashion blogger

You should also note that this entire set weighs 200 g, which is about 7 ounces or a bit less than half a pound. When all the extensions are placed in your hair it's quite heavy. I could see this being an issue for people who have thin hair or hair that breaks easily. If that's you, you may want to opt for a lighter version.

Being a Cali cool girl doesn't necessarily come naturally. But it does come from within. The act of looking "cool" or "trendy" or "beautiful" is something that works within us & then comes out. It's not about the clothes we wear or the products we can afford. It's all about how we feel about ourselves. In 2016 let's look toward empowering ourselves & others with positivity, positive thoughts, & positive compliments.

Would you ever wear hair extensions? What are your goals for 2016? How do you like this Cali Cool look? :]
