Life is a trip. It's a crazy roller coaster of memories, experiences, & moments long forgotten. It's somehow incredibly short yet unbearably long. It's filled with times you wish you could just obliterate from your mind. Then there are those moments when you try to fall sleep at night & you recall something, a small unsubstantial memory from years & years ago. I wonder why that happens.
Today I want to try something different, something I've never done before. I'm highlighting some of the photographs I took during my Europe trip but I'm doing them as double exposures. You get to see two unrelated moments from my journey abroad, but they mesh together to create a story. Now that story might be different from person to person or photo to photo. That's the beauty of photography & art.
While I was in Europe I kept a journal & would update it every day; sometimes I'd run a couple days late & would have to recall three days worth of activities & sights. I filled the journal with pamphlets from museums, business cards from places visited, & whatever paper-like material I could get my hands on.
By the time I got back to the states it was seven inches thick & a burden to carry around; same thing happened on my last Europe trip, but it was a sacrifice worth taking. It's a blast from the past flipping through the pages & watching the words lift off from paper & into my mind.
Then there are the pictures. I've browsed them so much & so often that they're ingrained in my brain. Imprinted. Engraved. Permanently embossed. Whether it's viewing the beauty of the Notre Dame in Paris, experiencing a day in Luxembourg City, gasping at the sheer gargantuan nature of the Cologne Cathedral in Germany or feeling humbled by the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, the memory is seemingly everlasting.
I'll tell you what: configuring a double exposure photograph is not an easy task. I learned from trial & error that some photos work well together, such as similar textures, focal points, or colors. It's a little creative outlet I'd like to continue working on & learning more about. This is just the beginning.
Which is your favorite photo? Where's the last place you traveled to? :]

Yes! Like a European Christmas or something. :]
DeleteThese photos are brilliant, I love how you've done that and it's worked really well - do you use a certain photoshop? I really love the second and last one, hope you had a nice trip to Europe, I'd love to visit Anne Frank's house, so interesting!

Just regular photoshop. :]
DeleteAAGGH, its way too hard to pick my favourite pic, I do love the one taken at night, which what seems to be a cathedral lit up and then maybe the second pic is some kind of forest...I thought I could make out leaves...the last place I travelled was Malaga but it was for a bday party and each day had a mamoth event so there wasnt really time to go sight-seeing. I love the idea of having a journal with bits and pieces from your trip, I did that when I went to NYC over a decade ago and I lost it...still makes me sad, tsigh...
ReplyDeleteYou're right! It's Amsterdam at night with a leafy overlay. :]
DeleteReally neat photos!

DeleteThis is such a unique idea Carmen! I love creativity like this! And the beauty is that these photos are more meaningful to you now since you were there, but some people might not know the backstory and somehow that makes them more special to you personally! Great post!

DeleteLovely pics, I like the composition and experimentation. My knowledge of exposure shots goes as far as motion blur, never really knew much about multiple exposure shots...
