Do you ever have one of those days when you feel like a glob of goo? One of those days where any type of movement feels like your ultimate nemesis & the thought of chipping away at your growing list of errands gives you the heebie-jeebies? That's how I feel today & that's okay. Sometimes it's perfectly acceptable to do nothing.
Today I am feeling a bit sickly & sore, which I might add is not the norm; I rarely get sick & albeit I'm not very ill. However, my nose perpetually runs, creating a red & raw itchy patch. My jaw is aching from my oral surgery procedure yesterday, so I'm stuck slurping down liquid foods. Here I am sipping on a now lukewarm mug of Earl Grey tea with a splash of almond milk. Apparently hot food or drink are not good for my stitches. If you add me on Instagram, you could have seen me lisping & drooling post-surgery!)
I have a pile of crumpled tissues & a half drank glass of water by my side, while I permanently apply lip balm to my cracked lips — a byproduct of yesterday's surgery. I'm lying in bed with laptop in my lap (so that's why it's called that...) watching Whitney Houston powerfully belt out the national anthem at the 1991 Super Bowl, which somehow led to my watching Mariah Carey's live performances circa 1995, which promptly guided me to Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On."
Then I remembered I had yet to watch the finale of Project Runway: Junior, which eventually influenced this post. I realized that in the midst of our busy bee lives, we really have to take a moment to rest & relax & just enjoy the little things. There will always be a list of things we have to get done & priorities we have to switch around. Sometimes we need that moment of pure nothingness, complete & utterly void of productivity, to feel our best. That's where I'm at right now.
Let this be a public service announcement to say: sometimes it's perfectly okay to do nothing. There's no need to feel guilty about sleeping in on the weekend or taking a moment to heal your mind, body, & soul. Think of it as an investment. If you take a moment to repair yourself, you'll be much more constructive when the time for action comes.
Join me today & this weekend in watching the gorgeous Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic, endlessly browsing videos of puppies learning to howl, & drinking cups of tea to make ourselves feel better. This is our temporary bliss.
How do you like to do nothing? What's your favorite movie to watch when you're feeling under the weather? :]

Off topic: but if those are your bed sheets I love them! On topic: I completely agree! There's nothing better than taking a day to just chill out. I hope you feel better and recover soon! That's how I felt when I got my wisdom teeth removed... living off Jello for a few days!

Aw, hope you feel better! I like to watch chick flicks when I am under the weather. One of my favorites right now is Love, Rosie. Let me know if you ever watch it!
ReplyDeleteMelanie | The Mel Division
I hope your pain goes quickly! When I'm feeling blue I like to have a shower or bath, listen to music and just watch videos or cuddle my cat while drinking tea. Sometimes just having a nap helps too!
ReplyDeleteSally ~ DiagonSally
I hope you feel better! :)
ReplyDeleteWhen I feel like crap I like to go for long baths & I mean loooong and have music playing in the background with a book, it always makes me feel better.

Feel better soon Carmen! When I am a bit down a love a bit of Eat, Pray, Love. It always makes me feel positive. And I can't agree more that it is definitely ok to do nothing every now and then. I'd say it's actually necessary to do nothing for a little bit every day.

I agree 100% with this post! We are all always so busy that sometimes we need to just take a step back, sit down and 'be.' I'm a huge advocate for this, we all need some me time now and again! Hope you feel better soon Carmen!

I hope you feel better, girl! And days with nothing to do are just THE BEST! I spend my days off reading, napping, singing - pretty much anything that doesn't require me to leave the house.

Disney movies sound like a great idea. :]
ReplyDeleteGood idea. Any Disney film in particular? :]
ReplyDeleteDoing nothing is the biggest challenge for me! I find it very difficult to relax and take time out. And staying off the phone for a few hours is just inconceivable for me.
ReplyDeletewww.luxessed.com
Yes, it's my bedspread. Definitely chilling out this weekend. :]
ReplyDeleteYou have any other chick flick recommendations? I haven't watched Love, Rosie! :]
ReplyDeleteSounds like you need to get a cat. :]
ReplyDeleteHmmm looks like a long bath is in my near future. :]
ReplyDeleteThank you. I'm feeling much better each day. :]
ReplyDeleteDo you watch the movie or read the book? :]
ReplyDeleteI got my wisdom teeth removed about three years ago. This gingivectomy surgery is actually a complication of that surgery. Don't let it scare you though. :]]]
ReplyDeleteRest is so important. Thanks for your kind words, Emily. :]
ReplyDeleteReading, napping, & singing sounds amazing. :]
ReplyDeleteOooh burning a candle is a great idea!! :]
ReplyDeleteThat's very true. A day off doesn't have to be only on the weekend. :]
ReplyDeleteI hope you're feeling better soon...I love to take a day every now and then to recharge my batteries and feel better :)

I totally had one of those days today. We got snowed in (or iced in, rather) and I literally did not leave the couch all day. I also just had a glass of wine in bed. No shame.
ReplyDeleteHope you start feeling better!

That's crazy. It's so important to spend some time, if not daily then weekly, to unwind. :]
ReplyDeleteAlways a good idea. :]
ReplyDeleteYou & me both. Well, today did some grocery shopping & meal prep. :]
ReplyDeleteIt really is so important to remember the little things. Hope you feel better!

I am so sorry sweetheart, get well soon. We all have those days when we just wanna laze around in our pjs and do nothing and that's totally me today.

I totally stand by you on this. Lately I've been so run down but powered through the long working week and then had so many things to do of a weekend I couldn't take a break. This Saturday however was completely free so I decided to make me time a priority. I'm not saying I didn't do anything because I did.. I watched 6 episodes of Ru Paul's Drag Race, filed and painted my nails and drank copious amounts of tea :)

Ahh so refreshing to hear this from someone. It really is okay to do nothing for a few days without the guilt!

I hope you're alright, Carmen, and I wish you all the best in recovery. As someone who always has an unending pile on her plate, learning to take a step back and enjoy some good quality rest has definitely been the light of everything. In an age where work is the norm, it's wonderful that we're being reminded that it's okay to take a break.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing, Carmen! x

My favorite way to do nothing is to snuggle up with my pup on the couch and read a good book, or binge watch a good show like The X-Files. If I'm sick, however, my go-to movie is Breakfast at Tiffany's. Always seems to get me better!
ReplyDeletedefinitely ok to do nothing, especially when your feeling rubbish. hope your feeling better now

This post is spot-on! I tend to beat myself up for having lazy days to the point I was working every day, which drove me to exhaustion. My immune system went crazy and I ended up being really ill for two weeks.
ReplyDeleteNow I make sure that I have at least one lazy day a week or at least a lazy night after work, and I feel so much better for it!
I love watching chic flicks when I'm down - especially Legally Blonde or Bridesmaids!
Lizzie Bee // mysticthorn.com
I hope you are feeling better now. Everyone needs an off day now and again without feeling guilty.
ReplyDeleteLove, Eline | www.elinesreturnticket.blogspot.com
Yeah, I find myself feeling like I want to do nothing sometimes. During such lazy days, I just lie in bed and watch modern family or friends.
ReplyDeletewendeeisaacs.com
Totally get those days! When I feel like that I just lie in bed and read with a cup of tea.
ReplyDeleteOh I have days like this all the time where I just feel like I need to do nothing and just recuperate, but always feel so guilty about doing it and thinking that there are other things I should be doing with my time. Hope you're feeling better :) xx
ReplyDeleteeat-sleep-breathe-fashion.blogspot.co.uk
Awww poor you babe, hope you are feeling much better! You are so right, it's perfect fine and actually recommended to allow yourself to have those kind of days. I had one on Monday and it was a complete waste of a day and my free time but I needed the down low key time <3
ReplyDeleteIt gave me such a boost next day & for the rest of the week.

Haha totally agree! I am a full time student with a demanding part time job, so I relax and do nothing whenever I'm not occupied with either of those things.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I love the layout of your blog!

Glob of goo weekends. I love them! :]
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a marvelous combination! :]
ReplyDeleteYes, Titanic is the perfect sick movie! :]
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not alone. :]
ReplyDeleteIt's vital to just rest sometimes. Stress doesn't help any. 6 episodes is a good amount. Maybe this weekend you can make it 10. :]
ReplyDeleteYes. Guilt free rest days should be a thing! :]
ReplyDeleteThanks May. My stitches are coming out & it's not the most pleasant, but I'm almost healed. Rest is simply necessary in this concrete jungle we live in. :]
ReplyDeleteX-Files! Yes. Have you caught up on the latest season/mini series? :]
ReplyDeleteStress will do that to you, causing more illness & fatigue. Hopefully we can always carve out the time to just 'be.' :]
ReplyDeleteFriends! YES. Good one. :]
ReplyDeleteWhat's your preferred cuppa tea? :]
ReplyDeleteWe shouldn't feel guilty, especially it a rest day is a rarity. :]
ReplyDeleteGreat point, Nadia. That (necessary) rest day can actually end up benefiting our productivity for the week. :]
ReplyDeleteThank you for the compliment, Kristi. I know how it feels. My worst year in university had me juggling being a full time student with a part time job & a part time internship. Those moments of rest are welcomed & needed. :]
ReplyDeleteAs a student, it's my job to do nothing most of the time. When you think about it, doing nothing is what got me to start my own travel blog http://www.inshanetraveler.com . Moral of the sotry do nothing more often. :)
ReplyDeleteLove this topic! I'm a self confessed introvert and just love spending time on my own to recharge from time to time. Sipping a cup of fine tea doing yoga in a candle-lit room are just some of things I do when I feel under the weather (or when the weather outside is actually yikey!). Self care time is totally underrated I feel :) Cheers for sharing.

This is so true. Sometimes I have whole days odd to relax but spend the whole time feeling guilty about it that I isn't even that relaxing. Great PDA - also I haven't had almond milk in my Earl Grey but obviously need to try that immediately,...
ReplyDeleteSo glad I found your blog

I'm a huge advocate for taking days for yourself! I definitely agree that taking a day for yourself is an investment. I usually find that when I take a day for myself I'm more productive because I've taken the time to replenish my energy and balance things out! This is one of those things people need to hear more often!! :)
ReplyDeleteI love reading when I want to relax myself!
