The Importance of Taking a Vacation

The icy Portland air hits my face, turning my nose a bright red similar to that of Rudolph the reindeer. I wrap my grey & black fleece sweater around myself like a tortilla around a burrito. I hear cars whizzing across the road as my shoes squish squish squish against the bed of leaves beneath my feet. I feel alive, truly.

In Portland, Oregon you can see a change of the seasons. There are trees of glorious yellow & bold orange. When the wind hits the trees just right it looks like a glitter of confetti falling from a party, an endless amount of leaves rolling their way to the ground. Beauty at its finest. I smell the scent of fresh bread wafting through the air, a boulangerie patisserie must be nearby. I hear the clatter of construction. I wonder how this place will look in a matter of years.

Taking a vacation is extremely important. It gets you away, if only temporarily, from the daily to dos of life. I know my list of tasks & errands has piled up during this trip, but it was much-needed. What better inspiration than to immerse yourself in a new place?

The circling of the helicopter quieted since my first day here. Portlanders protested the election of Donald Trump. Apparently, some anarchists joined the protest & began rioting, breaking windows & causing havoc. I wouldn't have experienced any of this if I was still sitting in my comfortable little apartment in San Diego.

That's the importance of taking a vacation, seeing something new, tasting something new, drinking something new, feeling out of your element, exploring the streets, seeing a different part of the world than you're used to, getting out of your little bubble of comfort. The world is big & there's so much going on around. See it. Experience it. Live it for yourself. It will make you a better human.

When you come back home you'll feel different. After seeing a fraction of the world, you realize just how much more there is to see. You'll feel it the moment you get back, or perhaps the moment you know you have to go back.

I write this from my hostel bedroom, well aware that I must check out in about an hour. I know there is a bus ride, a train ride, an airplane ride, & a car ride to take today. In a matter of hours I will depart Portland, Oregon & return to San Diego, California.

Even so, I sit here thinking about my next trip. Where do I want to go? Hopefully, I'll pack correctly next time. But that's just part of the journey. I guess I need to finish this trip first, but I can still daydream about my next one. Wherever that will be.

  10. Vacations are so important... to have new memories, or even recollecting "old ones", recreating some... the homeless guy who forgot you gave him money is now a new memory... and treats and scents... great pictures, you look lovely! One of my brothers lived in Oregon for some time, he says it was great!

  11. I agree that vacations are important. It's a way of resetting the mind IMO. Although I haven't really gone away in awhile, it's always nice to daydream about it though:) Thanks for sharing your Portland experience:)

  12. Sounds like a beautiful city - besides the recent protesting (that topic is for another day!) It's great to get out, experience new things and see different sites for sure. Even if it is still in the same country!
